What are the different types of security screen mesh?

Security Screen Mesh & Infill Options: The Professional’s Guide

For security screen installers and trade professionals, the choice of mesh defines the longevity of the installation. At Rockford, we manufacture the CommandeX range of security screen systems, which exceeds Australian Standards (AS 5039) and is engineered for Australia's harshest environments.

SecureView: Premium 316 stainless steel mesh

Best for high-end residential projects and clients looking for a corrosion-resistant Crimsafe alternative.

  • 316 marine grade mesh vs 304: Unlike 304-grade mesh used by competitors, 316 contains Molybdenum, making it the only choice for preventing "tea-staining" in Australian coastal regions.
  • Patented screwless technology: Most mesh failures occur at screw or rivet points. We use CommandeX’s patented chemical bond and pressure fit system that isolates the mesh from the frame to eliminate the risk of galvanic corrosion.
  • Superior visibility: The high-tensile wire allows for a thinner, tighter weave, providing the "invisible" look.

SaltWater Series: The “extreme coastal" solution

Best for beachfront homes 0-500m from the shoreline, canal-side developments, and properties in high-pollution zones.

  • Enhanced corrosion barrier: Utilises 316 Marine Grade Stainless Steel with a specialised pretreatment and high-durability powder coating.
  • Extreme longevity: Designed specifically for beachfront properties to reduce warranty claims.
  • Screwless: The patented fixing system ensures no mechanical fixings penetrate the mesh.
  • Maximum Warranty: Offers up to a 20-year extended warranty.

Xceed: High-performance perforated aluminium

Best for investment properties, high-traffic family homes, and commercial projects where budget and durability are top priorities.

  • Budget friendly: Offer a certified security product at a more competitive price point.
  • Privacy and airflow: The 1.6mm thick aluminium sheet provides excellent airflow and increased privacy.

Installation guidelines for trade professionals

To ensure the best outcome for your clients, use this environmental guide for mesh selection:

  • Extreme coastal (0-500m): Always specify SaltWater Series.
  • Coastal (500m - 5km): SecureView offers the perfect balance of protection and visibility.
  • Bushfire and cyclone zones: Both SecureView and SaltWater Series are BAL 40 and cyclone rated (AS/NZS1170.2).
  • Privacy and budget focused: Xceed is preferred for its dent-resistant rigidity.

How to Measure Security Doors and Window Screens

This guide explains how to measure the make size for hinged, sliding, and window security screens.

Accurate measurements are essential because Rockford will manufacture your custom security screen to the exact “make size” dimensions provided.

Getting Started

  • Always use a metal tape measure
  • We require all measurements in millimetres (mm)
  • Measure every door / window, as they may have slight variation that will affect your security screen from fitting perfectly
  • All measurements and positioning must be taken from the outside looking in, with all necessary deductions applied before submitting your order.

PLEASE NOTE: This document should be used as a guide only, as doors and window sizes may vary. Rockford Screens take no responsibility for incorrectly measured screens.

Inspect the door or window frame

Before measuring, check the surrounding frame carefully. Look for anything that could affect installation such as door handles, window latches, uneven frames, decorative trim, and door closers or security locks.

These features can influence hinge placement and lock positioning on the security screen.

Measuring lock height for a Security Door

Lock height is from bottom of door frame to the centre of the desired lock punch out. Use this method for both hinged and sliding doors to ensure the screen door handle does not clash with the door handle of the interior door.

How to measure for a Hinged Security Door

All sizes are finished size of outside a door frame

Measure the width of your door opening in 3 places*:

A. Top

B. Centre

C. Bottom

Deduct 8mm from this size to get your door width make size.

Measure the height of your door opening in 2 places:

A. Left

B. Right

Deduct 10mm from this size to get your security door height make size.

How to measure for a Sliding Security Screen Door

All sizes are finished size of outside a door frame

If you have an existing tracking, the channel width of the top track and the vertical receiver channel for the latch needs to be 21mm wide or more to fit our door frames.

Measure the width of your sliding security screen door

Measure from the face that the door lock butt into (usually in a channel) to the inside of the fixed glass frames of the adjacent panel.

Measure the width of your door opening in 3 places; the top, the centre, and the bottom.

Deduct 5mm from this size to get your door the width make size.

Measure the height of your sliding security screen door

With no tracks

Measure the height from the bottom to the top of where the track will go on installation.

  • Left side
  • Right side

Deduct 25mm – Take opening size and deduct 5mm for top track, 5mm for bottom track and 15mm for wheels to get your door make size.

Either top or bottom tracks

If you have one of both tracks, measure between the smallest points of the tracks/opening (from the one track guide to where the other track will go).

  • Left side
  • Right side

Deduct 20mm – Take opening size and deduct 5mm from either top track or bottom track or both track and 15mm for wheels to get your door make size.

With both tracks

Measure from the top track guide (inside of the top track) to the bottom track guide (top of the bottom track):

  • Left side
  • Right side

Deduct 15mm – Take opening size and deduct 15mm for wheels to get your door make size.

Double check all measurements

Please double-check your measurements before ordering. All screens are manufactured to the exact dimensions provided. We do not apply any deductions, though our team is available to offer technical advice if required.

PLEASE NOTE: This document should be used as a guide only, as doors and window sizes may vary. Rockford Screens take no responsibility for incorrectly measured screens.
